Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy for Fear of Flying

You are here:

Before I go into how I approach a person who has a fear of flying using Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, I thought it might be useful to explain why some people have this fear. Some of the reasons may resonate with you too.

Language fascinates me and we take it so much in, without realising we do so.

When you think about being at the airport, there is a lot of language we hear over the tannoy that we may not listen to, but we still hear. Some of that language has a double meaning such as:

  • Terminal
  • Final Destination
  • Final Call
  • Departure etc

Then there is the video on the plane about what to do if there is a problem AND a demonstration by cabin crew. Not exactly a positive start is it?

Now if you are nervous of flying already, these other things ‘could’ add to the existing fear. Generally, people do not pick up (at a conscious level) the double meaning but our subconscious mind notices and hears everything, and this fear can be passed to others. We can then feel fear.

A rather funny story (albeit not at the time) was when I was on a plane a few years ago and we hit some turbulence. I noticed a few nervous glances from passengers and the cabin crew updated us as to what was going on. Before the ‘please fasten your seatbelt’ sign was activated, one of the overhead compartments opened, and a few bags from inside fell into the aisle. It was at this point a young child screamed loudly “We are all going to dieeeee!!” Almost immediately, the majority of people on the plan were standing up and trying to rush around whilst the cabin crew tried to regain control. I can laugh about it now but at that moment, the fear in the plane spread throughout, as fear does. I think there were lots of ‘sighs of relief’ when we finally landed.

I mention the above story as albeit I have never been scared of flying, in that moment and with fear being so contagious, I certainly felt it.

So how can Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy help?

We will look at the reason for your fear. Is it due to an experience similar to my own, is it something you perhaps learned i.e. by seeing a fear in another, do you expect the worst to happen, is it the fact that you are not in control of the plane and it is in the hands of the pilot or is it something else? You may or may not know why. Regardless of whether you do or not, your subconscious will know. By exploring the basis of your fear we can address it, in normally in one or two sessions.

The benefits of this are huge. You will be able to enjoy the build up to your journey (especially if it is a holiday for a well-earned break) and the flight itself whilst feeling relaxed, positive and confident.
